Breining Institute, with its main campus located in California, was first approved as a provider of higher education by the State of California Department of Education in 1986.

Our degree programs have been specifically approved by the State of California after comprehensive review, and the current agency under which that approval is granted is the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE).

Breining graduate degree programs are specifically recognized for, among other things, the purpose of qualifying for the NAADAC (the largest, nationally-recognized addiction professional membership organization in the United States, with 44 US affiliate organizations) advanced and nationally-recognized Master Addiction Counselor (MAC) certification. And, our Masters degree program is specifically recognized by the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (ICRC), which represents member boards in 45 US States.

Breining Institute addiction studies programs are not easy. They are meant to challenge students so that they learn valuable information that they can take with them that will make them competent addiction professionals.

Course assignments are all completed by the distance learning method, require self-discipline to complete those assignments, and may require such outside-the-classroom activities such as interviewing counselors, addicts, and former addicts, as well as researching and writing about assigned addiction topics. Assignments may also require attending community meetings of agencies that deal with addictions.
If an individual is expecting to earn a certificate or degree simply by taking up space in a classroom, we would encourage that individual to enroll somewhere other than Breining Institute.
