The
Addiction Professional: Manual for Counselor Competency
(Second Edition) includes an examination and study of
the skills, knowledge and tasks of a competent addiction
counselor, including the TAP 21 Counselor Competencies
and the Twelve Core Functions, and was developed (and
has been continually updated since 1986) to assist the
student in becoming an effective addiction counselor.
The
Addiction Professional is also the basis for all
questions asked on the multiple-choice exam for the
nationally-accredited Registered Addiction Specialist (RAS)
credential: If it is not in the Manual, it will not
be on the exam.
With the
academic contributions of faculty, practitioners and
graduate students, the First Edition of the Manual,
published in 2005, was an expansion upon the six-workbook
series - the Chemical Dependency and other Addictive
Disorders study guide - developed in 1986 for students
in Breining's addiction certification program. This Second
Edition has updated and expanded on the information included
in the 2005 edition of the Manual.
The
Manual has, until now, only been available to Breining
Institute college students and candidates for the
nationally-accredited Registered Addiction Specialist (RAS)
certification. We are now making it available to treatment
professionals, employers, and educators in order to
accommodate the many requests that we have received to do
so.
This
Manual is not intended for sale to or use by the
general public, as it includes concepts and information
that requires a professional addiction counselor or
addiction studies student to properly interpret and utilize.
We hope
that you find this publication useful.
In order to get the most out of
this publication, you may also wish to use the FREE on-line
tutorial that walks the student through the Manual,
and helps RAS candidates prepare for the certification exam.
